For every "this author has no grasp of the gay male psyche. x would never happen," review I get, I get another saying "I loved your book. x particularly resonated with me because I had exactly the same experience." So I'm wary of anyone who thinks they can talk for an entire group of people throughout history as if all the members of that group were inherently the same. I think the key is to just remember that your characters are human and write them like individuals - whatever group they might belong to.
