I left it open on purpose, obviously, but I like to think he just barely missed the rocks, maybe got slapped up against one or two by a big wave, and managed to swim out and tind some driftwood to float away on. If nobody shows up, he'll eventually dehydrate for the Dutchman to make an appearance (and likely save him for the living).
