I don't see this as OOC at any point. I don't even see it as dark.
If Will has had to adjust to the task of Death itself, then this would be the realistic outcome. It would become too much for even Will to bear if he'd be taking everything as emotionally as he's done in his human life.

“I am merciful Death.”
...and suddenly I want to die at sea :)
