Everything I read, indicated that the script was written somewhat after-the-fact by Howard Hawks once he had returned to California with footage in the can. More importantly, though, the script (such as it is) was credited to Leigh Brackett, the most important female Science Fiction author outside of Andre Norton (both of whom were writing the genre when it was still mostly a boys' only club.)
Not helpful to you but I found it interesting. (LB also wrote the script for my favorite John Wayne western of all time--Rio Bravo. That Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin were just MADE for each other.;)
