Drabble Prompt 5 for [livejournal.com profile] potc_dogwatch
Title: Open Water
Rating: G
Disclaimer: This one’s a toss-up; he may belong to Buena Vista and Bruckheimer, after all.
Summary: A Turner goes to sea
Spoilers for AWE: Most probably.

Each night, he’d fallen asleep to the box’s steady thrumming. It had been constant for seven years, since he traded the heartbeat of his womb for the reassuring wooden thunk of his father’s next to his small bed.

Now it swayed with him on the vast ocean. Mama said he couldn’t be harmed upon the sea. It had been simple to cast offshore in the rowboat while she and Captain Jack slept – to be free, like Mama wanted to be.

William ran a small hand over the top of the chest as he excitedly waited to meet Papa, at last.

*heart attack dies down*

Thank you for saying so. You have a gift with saying so much with so little. I honestly started fearing the worst for little Will.

I'm not big on kids, but I'd never do that to one. Especially not one of Will's. *G*

Well, had he died, he still would have seen his father. Would have been a morbid twist on hopeful goals.

Nope. In fact, if this kid wanted, he could probably become the richest merchant marine in the world at the time.

Oh, good! I was getting a decidedly nasty feeling from that ending. I'm glad I was wrong.

Wonderful drabble! I second everyone who said you need to write more about this Will Turner. :)

Aww, young William! There's a lot of dramatic possibility in the idea of the son of the CotFD, much as I'm not a particular fan of Elizabeth being a single mom and Will not getting to raise his son. I like this one. It wants a longer story.

There's a lot of possibility in Dad picking him up and wondering why the hell he's out drifting around by himself. I may well have to write more ...

Thanks!

You most certainly will! That was lovely, and I'm definitely hoping for more.

Although is the Captain Jack staying with "Mama" canon as far as we know? I was sort of hoping that particular theory was more all in the JEers heads. Hehe.

At this point, I know as much as you do. It's just speculation, mixed with a lot of fans' desire to see Elizabeth chuck Will and his heart to leap into bed with Jack.

From: [identity profile] gryphons-lair.livejournal.com
The most obvious problem with Liz ending up in bed with Jack (assuming the spoiler script is accurate) is that according to canon, Will can come ashore every 10 years as long as his love is faithful. So Liz fooling around with Jack would mean Will was doomed to never set foot on land again.

I assure you, there are fans who don't care what happens to Will.

Geez, I'm commenting a lot. You see, you start me on an interesting topic and there's no stopping me.

What you said is basically the reason that I don't want to go near KTTC after AWE is released. I've heard enough horrid things about Will by JE fans (why don't we just throw him overboard? who would care? <--GR!) that I don't want to think about what bitter JE fans are going to say when they don't get their way.

And just to keep this from being viewed as bashing, this is just a few specific fans that I'm talking about. I'm in now way generalizing or referring to the entire JE fanbase with what I said.

I'm in no way generalizing or referring to the entire JE fanbase with what I said.

I'm a catty bitch to the ones who annoy me. I mean, I'm just a catty bitch generally, but I think the ones who take great offense are the ones who NEED to. Everyone else just ignores it or rolls their eyes. "There she goes again" I hope they say.

So am I actually. I just thought for a second that I was posting at [livejournal.com profile] turningpirate and I know that there's been issues with the JE fanbase, so I didn't want to start anything. I do have a tendency to do that, or at least to want to do that.

From: [identity profile] solitaryraven.livejournal.com
Haha. That's exactly what it feels like. Like I don't want to cause problems but sometimes I'd really just love to bitch at all of the stupid fans.

Date: 2007-05-05 05:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gryphons-lair.livejournal.com
Well, yes, but I was talking about it vis a vis the movie as depicted in the spoiler script, not as some JE fans would prefer it to be.

Date: 2007-05-05 04:22 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] solitaryraven.livejournal.com
Agreed.

Although Jones could set foot on land every ten years even though his love wasn't faithful.

Someone on KTTC mentioned that, with the wording in either the novel or the script, it seemed almost as though Will would be able to return to land in ten years if his lover remains faithful, so that gives me hope, and definitely rules out a possibility for JE because Elizabeth isn't going to go fooling around with anyone no matter how lonely she is if not doing so means that Will can return to her permanently in ten years.

Do we know Tia Dalma/Calypso was unfaithful? Or do we just assume it because Jack acts like he's bedded her? 'Cause I don't see Jack's behavior as a particularly reliable guide in that matter.

Taking the other side of the argument, according to Jones' backstory, he cut out his heart because his lover left him and he couldn't bear the pain of it, not so he could become captain of the Dutchman. So why in the seven hells does Will have to give up his heart to be her captain?

Date: 2007-05-05 04:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com
I have no idea why Will would have to give up his heart, except I guess it makes a good plot device for Elizabeth having a constant reminder to not cheat on him. She actually needs that sort of thing.

Date: 2007-05-06 11:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] solitaryraven.livejournal.com
No. And I never assumed that it was Jack either, although I do think they tried to imply that. I think from everything that was said, though, it was implied that Tia/Calypso didn't have feelings as strong as Davy's and because of that she broke his heart which led to the curse, etc. So, I think it's safe to say that at some point she was unfaithful with someone.

That's the question that I have, as well. I remember everyone assuming that the heart being ripped out part wouldn't be forced on Will. I'm not sure how or why that ties in, especially considering that Davy ripped his out. *shrugs* Aw well, at least it's in safe hands. Hehe. Hopefully.

Good. I'm sort of worried about the JE fans that seem to be in the know. Although, I have faith as to what the ending is going to be, so I'm not worried.

Definitely continue this! I enjoyed the plot starter a lot!

Aw, go get 'em little Will. He seems to have much in common with his papa. And what a soothing (if horribly creepy to those without such other-worldly concerns) pacifier - better than a kitten.

~~~
I'm still sure Jack is not going to end up with Liz (as bed warmer or otherwise), but it's just my faith in TnT and Bruckheimer to conserve the unique moneymaker they have (in Jack the foot lose and fancy free).
And I love that icon. :D
I don't know - I'm pretty sure I'D rather have a kitten than Dad's heart in a box. And now I have images of Elizabeth hiding that box under the floorboards and after she has her fling with Jack, it getting louder and louder and LOUDER AND LOUDER AND OMG LOUDER until she has to rip up the floorboards ...
Ahem. Poe was crazy, too.
That particular icon is free for the using.
Guilt (and probably whatever's on Jack's breath) will do that to you.
"Poe was crazy"
He was just born too early for Xanax. :-p
"free for the using"
I do want to swipe that icon. But I have an idea for my own, now that I've - sorta - figured out how to do text boxes in photoshop again. (So I'll hold off. For now. :-p)
First of all, I have to do another icon squee. I love the 'Death' one, but this one is a 100 pixel2 piece of genius. Now for the drabble. This is my favourite one so far. I like how little Will gets to be with his father, as big Will didn't. I like the hint that Liz still craves freedom more than she wants to be with anyone - Will or Jack. But most of all I like the precision of the vocabulary - just the right words to evoke so much with so little. Whenever I read something you've written, it's like listening to a great singer - you know you can just relax and enjoy it completely because there isn't going to be a bum note.
*beams with the adulation* Considering I really can't sing, that's an even more touching comment, and from someone whose fics are always great to read (even if you do have a tendency to make us wait ... and wait ... and WAIT ... and wait some more ... for any action between those two ...)!
Beautiful.
I'm not going to criticize what parts I do and don't like because it all makes sense, whether I like it or not, it makes for a great story.
Like this a lot. For some reason, it evoked images of Jack telling sweet, little, serious-faced, curly-haired wee!Will all sorts of outlandish (and ridiculously true) stories about his Dad (and himself, as course).
For some reason, I heartily love the image of Jack talking to little William. He'd feel older than dirt doing it, of course, but it'd still be sort of sweet.
